The eagerly awaited Finalissima between Argentina and Spain is nearing a final decision on its hosting location, after a prolonged period of uncertainty.
This event faced numerous difficulties due to the situation in Qatar, the country initially chosen to host. The anticipated match between the champions of CONMEBOL and UEFA was consequently delayed.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, stakeholders wish to maintain the original Finalissima schedule on March 27. However, Qatar is reportedly unwilling to relinquish its hosting rights, as the nation has signed significant commercial agreements to stage the match in its capital, Doha.
According to RNE Deportes, a high-level meeting will take place on March 9 to reach the final decision. The meeting is expected to include representatives from UEFA (Spain's side), CONMEBOL (Argentina's side), along with officials from the Qatari government, who are striving to retain hosting rights for the match.
Although the situation in Qatar has not escalated severely since early March, both continental federations prioritize the safety of players and fans. This is particularly crucial for star players like Messi and Yamal, as well as the thousands of fans expected to travel to Doha.
In this context, several alternative venues have been considered. According to Spanish media, Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal is currently the strongest candidate to host the Finalissima.
Another option proposed was Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy, but the Lisbon option is reportedly clearly favored. Additionally, other countries mentioned include the United States, Spain, Argentina, and England. However, the U.S. was ruled out due to regional tensions similar to Qatar's, and hosting in Spain or Argentina was not approved as it could grant a home advantage to one of the teams.
The option of returning the match to Wembley Stadium, where Messi lifted the Finalissima trophy in 2022, was also considered. However, the London stadium is booked on March 27 for a friendly match between Uruguay and England.
Currently, all organizing parties agree that the top priority is ensuring the Finalissima proceeds as planned, while the match venue will be the key issue decided in the upcoming meeting.
